Digital Equipment Corp. - Designed and developed a custom account management solution, used by 50 sales reps, integrating information from mainframe and VAX computers with ACT! on a MS Win NT based network. The application was developed using Visual Basic, and was one of the first to utilize an ACTAPI allowing management of the proprietary ACT! database structure without corruption of the index and structures. A separate module was developed in Visual Basic to redistribute contacts between the sales force based on a reassignment listing prepared centrally. The utility archives the contact in the original salespersons database, notes whom the new account manager will be, adds the contact to the new salespersons database, and notes the former account manager. A full accounting of each move was recorded in a transaction log file for data restoration purposes.

Cargill Fertilizer - Managed and participated as principal designer in the development of a very complex, monthly sales forecasting application using Visual Basic, MS Jet database engine, and Crystal Reports. This application sends and receives updates from the central AS/400 based system to track and compare forecast and actual monthly and annual sales of each product to each customer and included and "End of Year" rollover of information. The central update module is a separate Visual Basic application that utilizes the Lotus VIM API for cc:Mail and Lotus Notes as the e-mail transport mechanism.

Johnson & Johnson Professionals - Managed a team of developers who designed and implemented a competitive tracking system in Lotus Notes. This systems is used by a sales force of 40, responsible for maintaining orthopedic medical product in hospitals. A second component of this project was to design, develop and deliver a competitive quoting system using MS Access, Visual Basic, and Crystal Reports to build comparative bids for client using competitors products. The system provides cross reference information on over 400 Johnson & Johnson products and 2500 competitor’s products.

Pierce Leahy Archives - Managed a team of developers and trainers that substantially customized a Lotus Notes based, opportunity management product, IntellAgent Control, to suit the requirements of a national sales force of 5 regional managers and 25 salespeople. The Lotus Notes modifications adapted the package to the sales model and tracking requirements and provided reporting on the sales activities that were not possible prior to the deployment. Trained the entire sales force in a series of intensive training sessions over a two week period.

Harrah’s New Orleans - Designed, developed, and implemented a sales and reservation tracking system based on ACT! integrated with AS/400 databases. This system integrated network ACT! databases with a MS Access database and a nightly extraction of data from the AS/400 databases to create custom performance reports using Visual Basic and Crystal reports. The network environment was Windows NT with Windows 3.11 clients. A related project with this client was the development of a utility to integrate ACT! with an AS/400 based player tracking system using Visual Basic and APPC API’s by RUMBA. The system allows the currently displayed contact in ACT! to automatically be used in the selection criteria when switching to the AS/400 based system to access additional player statistics and credit information.

Hewlett Packard - Netherlands - Designed and developed a utility to consolidate data from remote ACT! database and distribute prospects from a centralized database without user interaction. The application was developed in Visual Basic using MS Jet database engine, and API’s to compress, uuencode/uudecode, and to transfer the updates via Internet based e-mail.

Vice President - Product Development - Conceived, designed and developed an expense logging and tracking system that tightly integrated with Symantec's ACT! for Windows contact management product. The application allows expense tracking on either a personal or project basis, with links to the contact records in any ACT! database. Several standard reports were available that present the information selected and sorted by Contact, Date, Expense Type, Amount, Payment Method, YTD Totals, etc. The application was commercially marketed for eighteen months, selling several thousand units, and was ultimately used as the basis for custom development projects. Development was primarily in Visual Basic and Crystal Reports.

INDEPENDENT SOFTWARE CONSULTANT December 1993 to June 1994

Pitney Bowes - PB Account Management System - Designed and developed a custom account management extension to Symantec's ACT! for Windows contact management product. The system allows the sales force at Pitney Bowes to use ACT! for their normal contact information management and to access related account data in external databases from within ACT! The related information is presented on additional screens that preserve the ACT! application interface. Two extraction and merge programs were developed to manage the bi-directional transfer of updates between the individual sales databases and their mainframe databases. The system requires no explicit action by the user to perform transfers or updates. Pitney Bowes' existing electronic mail capabilities are utilized as the transport facility for the data transfers. A database creation tool was also built to perform the conversion of existing mainframe data into the remote account database. All of the applications were developed with Visual Basic and Q+E/VB utilizing DDE and API functions. The system was developed with a modular approach in anticipation of connecting to ODBC databases in future network implementations.

CONSOLIDATED EDISON CO. OF NEW YORK, INC. June 1980 to November 1993

Chemical Information System (CIS) - Managed a team in the design and development of a real-time data acquisition and monitoring system used at each of Con Edison's power generating plants. Boiler water and other plant chemical analysis from the in-line process monitors is captured using Transition Technologies analog to digital interface on a PC. The data capture application updates a SQL Server database across the LAN. A separate application connects to the SQL-Server and presents the information in a graphical interface that was developed using Visual Basic and ODBC. The presentation client component of CIS is used by control room personnel, plant management, and system engineering (across the corporate WAN) to view real-time information and system trends. Early prototypes of the CIS presentation system revealed a strong client response to a control panel metaphor using gauge objects and resulted in a highly configurable and customizable user interface.
